P6 Fun Day

The objective of the P6 Fun Day (14 March 2005) was to provide students with some fun and meaningful activities so that their teachers could engage them in a small group conversation about the activities they had just experienced.

The day's programme began with ice breakers.

The students gathered in their small groups of ten to twelve. Each was given a card with many characteristics listed on it. They had to ask questions to find out which of their friends fit these characteristics. In the process of asking questions, they discovered more about their friends' likes and dislikes and they learnt something about their friends' habits.

After the ice-breaking activities, the students proceeded to one of the four different stations. A roster was drawn so that each of the students would have the opportunity to go to all the four stations by the end of the day.

The four stations were as follows:

  1. Tell-a-story

At this station, students were given pictures of different objects and they were given time to work together as a group to weave a story by making use of the pictures. Each person in the group had to take turns to continue the story once it was started. The students had to exercise their creativity and think on their feet as the story went on, sometimes differently from what they had originally planned.

  2. Come and Sell

At this station, the students in each group selected a product from among those displayed and they were given time to plan how they would 'sell' this product. They learnt how to promote products more effectively and how to advertise in an entertaining and exciting manner in order to engage their audience. In the process, they developed greater confidence in their oral skills.

  3. Let's Act

At this station, students in each group were given a bag of props and they were given time to think of a skit and act it out. They had to involve everyone in the skit. The students were innovative in the use of the props.

  4. Who am I? + Clowning Around

At this station, students worked in pairs instead of as a group. For the activity, 'Who am I?', each pupil was given a card with a different picture. They had to ask questions to get clues to help them guess what pictures their partners were holding. The pairwork gave all students the opportunity to express themselves in a non-threatening manner.

For the activity, 'Clowning Around', each student was given a piece of paper with pictures of 15 different clowns on it. The students worked in pairs and they took turns to secretly choose a clown and their partners had to guess which clown they had chosen by asking questions about the clowns and eliminating them based on the answers given. The students learnt to describe the clowns using grammatically correct English. They also learnt the importance of listening attentively.
When the students had completed the activities at the four stations, they gathered in their groups to have a conversation with their friends and teacher regarding the day's activities. They shared their experiences, their feelings about how they worked as a group and the lessons learnt. They also discussed how the Fun Day could be made better by giving their suggestions.
