Reflexive pronouns are used in the following ways:
  1. Reflexive use

To refer to actions where the subject and the object are the same person. In other words, the person/thing doing the action is the same as the person/thing receiving the action.

    • I cut myself this morning.
    • The horse hurt itself.
    • Talking aloud to oneself is not a healthy sign.

Note: In the reflexive use, the reflexive pronoun follows the verb. In the case of an intransitive verb (i.e., a verb that does not have an object), the pronoun will follow any preposition used with the verb.

  2. Emphatic use

To emphasize a word, to mean "that person/thing and nobody/nothing else!"

    • The manager said, "I will do it myself".
    • I will go and talk to the President himself if I have to.

Note: The pronoun is placed (1) at the end of the sentence or (2) after the noun it emphasizes.

  3. After prepositions

    • He went to the concert by himself. (= alone, without company)
    • I can do it by myself.
    • (= alone, without help)
    • She was pleased with herself.
    • She bought a bag for herself.
